Automatic Fire Detection Systems can be Broadly Categorized:

Smoke detectors are the most common, with ionization and photoelectric types being prevalent. Heat detectors respond to temperature changes, and flame detectors utilize UV or IR sensors. Gas detectors identify harmful gases like carbon monoxide.


1. Smoke Detectors:

  • Ionization Smoke Detectors: These contain a small radioactive source that ionizes air, creating a current. Smoke entering the chamber disrupts this current, triggering the alarm. They are sensitive to fast-flaming fires and small, invisible particles.
  • Photoelectric Smoke Detectors: These use a light beam and a sensor. When smoke enters the chamber, it scatters the light onto the sensor, activating the alarm. They are more effective at detecting slow, smoldering fires.
  • Combined Ionization/Photoelectric Detectors: These detectors combine both technologies to offer a broader range of fire detection capabilities.

2. Heat Detectors:

  • Fixed-Temperature Detectors: These activate when the temperature exceeds a specific threshold.
  • Rate-of-Rise Detectors: These activate when the temperature increases rapidly.
  • Linear Heat Detectors: These use a cable or sensor along a length to detect heat.

3. Flame Detectors:

  • Ultraviolet (UV) Detectors: These detect the UV radiation emitted by flames.
  • Infrared (IR) Detectors: These detect the infrared radiation from flames.
  • UV/IR Combination Detectors: These detectors combine both UV and IR sensors for enhanced detection.
  • Multi-Spectrum Infrared Detectors: These detectors use multiple infrared sensors to identify different infrared signatures of flames.

4. Gas Detectors:

  • Carbon Monoxide Detectors: These detect carbon monoxide gas, which is often produced by fires.

5. Other Types:

  • Aspirating Smoke Detectors: These systems draw air samples through a network of pipes to detect smoke.
  • Automatic Sprinklers: These systems detect heat and automatically release water to suppress a fire.
