- Combustible concealed spaces: Omission is allowed in tight cavities (<6 inches between joists), spaces filled with noncombustible insulation, or where fire-stopping and insulation meet NFPA standards.
Residential Applications
- Bathrooms under 55 sq. ft. (5.1 m²) with a 15-minute thermal barrier
- Closets, linen closets, and pantries under 24 sq. ft. (2.2 m²) with noncombustible or limited-combustible surfaces
- Attics, penthouse equipment rooms, elevator machine rooms, and ventilation spaces not used for occupancy or storage
Exterior & Specialized Spaces
- Canopies, balconies, decks, roofs, and porte cocheres built from noncombustible, limited-combustible, or fire-retardant-treated wood
- Exterior exit corridors with at least 50% open walls constructed of noncombustible materials
- Stair shafts of noncombustible construction: sprinklers only at the top and under the first access landing
- Beneath ground floors, exterior platforms, or decks without storage or fuel-fired equipment
Other Key Considerations
- Where sprinklers are omitted, hydraulic design may need adjustment; e.g., minimum design area may increase to 3,000 sq. ft. (279 m²) for combustible concealed spaces
- Access panels alone do not trigger sprinkler requirements in noncombustible concealed spaces
- NFPA 13D and 13R systems prioritize life safety, allowing omissions in low-risk spaces like garages, carports, or small projections with alternative egress
