What are the 3 A’s of Fire Safety?

The Three ‘A’s of Fire Safety are Activate, Assist, & Attempt

When a fire is detected, first Activate the building’s alarm system and call 911.

Then, Assist anyone in immediate danger by helping them escape.

Only after these steps should you Attempt to extinguish the fire, and only if it’s safe to do so.

1. Activate

• Activate the fire alarm system: If the alarm hasn’t been triggered automatically, activate it to alert others in the building.
• Call 911: Immediately notify the fire department by calling 911.

2. Assist

• Help others in danger: Assist any people who are in immediate danger or incapable of escaping on their own, without putting yourself at risk.

3. Attempt

• Only if safe: After activating the alarm and assisting others, you can attempt to put out the fire.
• Use a fire extinguisher: If you attempt to extinguish the fire, use the appropriate extinguisher and remember the PASS method (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep).
• Know when to stop: Only attempt to extinguish the fire if it is small, contained, and you know how to use the equipment. If the fire grows, evacuate immediately.
