What do GFCI plugs Do?
A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protects people from lethal electrical shocks by monitoring the electrical current in a circuit and rapidly cutting off power if it detects a “ground fault,” an unintended path for electricity to flow. This happens if current leaks from the circuit, potentially through a person’s body. GFCIs are required in locations like bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoors to prevent electrocution where water or moisture may be present.
How a GFCI Works
- Constant Monitoring: A GFCI continuously compares the amount of electrical current flowing into the circuit to the amount returning.
- Detecting Imbalance: If a ground fault occurs, some current leaks out of the intended path, creating an imbalance.
- Rapid Shutdown: The GFCI detects this imbalance (as little as 5 milliamps) and instantly trips, shutting off power to the circuit before a dangerous shock can occur.

- Electrocution: GFCIs are designed to prevent electrocution and serious injury from electrical shock by tripping faster than the electrical current can cause harm.

Types of GFCIs
- GFCI Receptacles: The familiar outlets with “TEST” and “RESET” buttons that protect the outlets downstream on the same circuit.
- GFCI Circuit Breakers: A single GFCI breaker in the electrical panel can protect an entire circuit, including all lights, fans, and outlets on it.
